My detour into making a riichi ref doc is now mostly finished.
This Week
I've finished going through all my non-sanma books and taking notes on them. You can find the document here. There's a lot of info, and it's delivered quickly. Take your time.
As I watch more videos or read more books, I'll update it bit by bit. I said it was around 60 pages last time, but I changed it to a pageless view, which made the page count go down a bunch. It's probably doubled in content since last week.
Back when I last played, there was very little consolidated information available for higher levels in English. I have no idea if that's changed since. I am voluntarily isolated. But, more sources can only be good. Syntopical reading and all that.
I'd personally suggest people start with Riichi Book 1 and spend some months there until they have it down. Then, move on to The Mental Game of Poker. After that, read through my document as an introduction to all the higher level concepts. Then find specific things that go into more depth on the topics they want to dive into, if such things exist.
Next Week
Now that that's done, it's time to get back to the actual playing Mahjong part.
Okay. Let's see. This is the "mental" month. Let's do some intense mental training.
As you may recall, one of my biggest mental issues is injustice tilt. Seeing bad players get rewarded. To really intensify that, let's go play on Tenhou.
You can pay to skip ippan in Tenhou and go straight to joukyuu. In Mahjong Soul terms, I guess that'd be skipping to Gold? Gold is weaker than the joukyuu of my memories, but it has been a long time.
Anyway, I'm not going to pay this time around. I'll force myself to go through ippan. That's a place that will very easily trigger my mentality issues, so it's the perfect place to stamp them down.
However, there's one big problem.
What do I make my Tenhou name...?
On Mahjong Soul, you can express yourself through your cosmetic choices. But, on Tenhou, you're limited to the 8 characters of your display name. It always makes me want to find something silly to use. 热血未冷壮志鳳凰? Zero people will get that reference. ドベルごろんデス? Another niche reference. 鳴かせてください? Might have the opposite effect. 強くなりたい? Plain. 麻雀道の修真者? I'll decide on something eventually...
I'll also take this opportunity to determine which NAGA version I want to use as a guide. Just from the answers in ないおトン's book, I feel it'll end up being カガシ, but maybe オメガ will surprise me. I'll eventually have to advance to self-grading. That takes quite a bit of effort though, and for now my effort is focused elsewhere.
Next week, maybe there'll be a guest appearance...? No promises.
