Exercise - Mangan Shibari

This exercise helps you learn how to build bigger hands, as well as improves the speed of your information gathering. This exercise is from Week 2.

On Tenhou, start a fast tonpuusen against the tsumogiri bots. Every time they discard, do your information gathering. They discard extremely quickly, so this will really push your speed to the limit. While doing that, you also have to build big hands, and clear these goals, in order:
  1. Win a hand that has at least a 33% chance of being a mangan or better. This would be a riichi hand that requires ippatsu or 1 ura in order to be mangan, while having at least 9 unique tiles in the hand.
  2. Win a hand that's guaranteed to be mangan or better.
  3. Win a hand that's guaranteed to be mangan or better, without counting aka dora. So, you need an additional han for each aka dora in your hand.
Calling is allowed, and you can count kiriage mangans (4 han 30) as mangan. However, you can't kan. Also note that those need to be cleared in order. If you get a guaranteed mangan for your first hand, that only counts for the 33% chance step.

Make sure you have a good understanding of all possible yaku. This training could especially pay off  if you find yourself needing a mangan in South 4. This will also naturally rise in difficulty as you progress through the information gathering levels.

Due to the extreme mental energy required for this exercise, I often do it after my games instead of before. If you're having a bad day, it can also take quite a while. Feel free to leave out the third step when just starting with the exercise.
